Amália Rodrigues
The Portuguese call her the "rainha do fado" (queen of fado), and she is one of
the greatest voices of the 20th century, equal to Maria Callas in expressive
intensity. Adored in her homeland, Amália Rodrigues triumphed on the greatest
international stages and left over one hundred and seventy recordings. She died
in 1999, making her the only woman to be inducted into Lisbon's National
Pantheon.
