Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a pianist and an influential exponent of Afro-Cuban jazz.
Born in Havana, Cuba, he learned classical piano from the age of eight,
graduated in music and spent his youth playing concerts in Havana. His father
was the pianist, composer and bandleader Guillermo Rubalcaba.
He toured France in 1983 with the Cuban band Orquesta Aragon. In 1985 he formed
his own band Grupo Proyecto and was spotted by Dizzy Gillespie. He played at the
1986 Havana Jazz Festival with the American rhythm section of Charlie Haden and
