JD Allen is an American jazz saxophonist and composer whose playing was
described by the New York Times in 2017 as "an immersive, purifying experience"
with a sound that was "somewhere between mournful and swaggering". The newspaper
praised his work with his trio of ten years - Gregg August on bass and Rudy
Royston on drums - and noted that his 2016 album, 'Americana: Musings On Jazz
and Blues', had earned "broad acclaim". It went to number ten on Billboard's
