LUNA SEA
The chart-topping visual kei band Luna Sea formed in Kanagawa, Japan, in 1989.
Bandmates Onose Jun, Kiyonobu Inoue, Yune Sugihara, Shinya Yamada, and Ryuichi
Kawamura found an early champion in X-Japan guitarist Hideto Matsumoto, who
encouraged Luna Sea during its infancy and helped the band earn a deal with the
cult label Exstacy Records. Luna's eponymous debut album failed to achieve real
commercial success, but a sold-out tour in 1992 led them to a deal with
Universal, which in turn led to several top 10 albums through the early 1990s.
