Born in Paris, France on October 19, 1983, jazz drummer and bandleader Makaya McCraven was raised in Northampton, Massachusetts in a musical family. The son of drummer Stephen McCraven and Hungarian singer Agnes Zsigismondi, Makaya McCraven took an interest in music at a young age. Introduced to jazz and African American culture by musicians and neighbors Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef, he followed his father's path and formed his first group Cold Duck Complex, who recorded three albums.
