Born in Brazil on October 25, 1937, Roberto Menescal is an acclaimed bossa nova
and samba guitarist, composer, and producer. He is acknowledged as a pioneer in
bossa nova and has worked with artists such as Sylvia Telles, Carlos Lyra, Nara
Leão, Wanda Sá, and Ale Vanzella. In 1958, he formed one of the first bossa nova
groups and performed across the country, helping the bossa nova genre take root
in Brazil. As a songwriter, his best-known compositions are “O Barquinho” –
