Terri Lyne Carrington (born in Massachusetts in 1965) is one of the few female
drummers in the jazz world. A student at Berklee College of Music and pupil of
Tony Williams and Jack DeJohnette, she recorded her debut album TLC and Friends
in 1982, before appearing on television shows The Arsenio Hall and VIBE. As
attracted to funk and rock as she was to avant-garde jazz, Terri Lyne Carrington
returned to the studio for Real Life Story (1988), accompanying Herbie Hancock
and a myriad of other artists (Cassandra Wilson, Wayne Shorter, John Patitucci,
