A revival in garage rock in the early 2000s saw the return of drainpipe jeans,
vintage equipment and shaggy, retro haircuts, as guitar groups finally shook off
their Brit-pop hangovers and injected some spiky, swaggering cool back into the
indie scene. Alongside The Strokes, The White Stripes were hailed as leaders of
the new guard and as they stormed around Europe they brought with them fellow
