Totó la Momposina (b. 1948) is one of the great names in South American music. The Colombian singer defends the traditional rhythms of her country, a blend of indigenous music and African and Hispanic contributions. Cumbia, sexteto, gaita, porro or mapale find in her a voice and energy that symbolize them perfectly. Since the Cantadora album recorded in France in 1983, Totó la Momposina has become a recognized figure on the world music scene.
