Jazz pianist Yōsuke Yamashita was born on February 26, 1942, in Tokyo, Japan. He
began studying the violin at the age of 9 but turned his attention to the piano
when he was 15. In 1959, he began playing the piano professionally. Between 1962
and 1967, he studied classical composition at the Kunitachi College of Music.
During this period, he joined a group and began playing at a local jazz club,
exploring different aspects of the genre, and becoming a pioneer of free jazz
